The problem with simply adding inorganic trace minerals to the animal’s diet is that these inorganic minerals are not effectively utilised. Inorganic mineral sulphates, oxides, chlorides, nitrates, phosphates, and carbonates have a low availability, ranging from 4 – 22%. Many of the inorganic products have molecular weights which are too large to be absorbed and used by the intestinal tract.
Therefore, the body must expend energy to break down and restructure these minerals so that they can be transported across the intestinal wall, into the bloodstream where they are utilised by the animal. Unfortunately, up to 80% of these inorganic trace minerals when broken apart will combine with other substances that will render them unavailable to the animal. They are then excreted out of the body and never make a nutritional contribution to the animal.
Adding more inorganic trace minerals is not the answer because toxicity can occur.
